These data are from one of fourteen 2001 submersible "Clelia" dives. Narratives including habitat
descriptions and estimates of megafaunal species abundance were derived by J. Arcuri from videotapes recorded during the dives.
The suite of data presented in the Oculina Banks Geographic Information System (OGIS) were collected as part of a
cooperative project between: the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Undersea Research
Program, NOAA Fisheries (also primary sponsor of OGIS), NOAA Ocean Service, NOAA Ocean Exploration Program, the
U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)-- Coastal and Marine Geology Program, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) and
Florida State University. An Oculina Geographic Information System (OGIS) provides a comprehensive, interactive data source for the Oculina Banks Habitat Area
of Particular Concern (OHAPC), a marine protected area off the east coast of Florida in 70 to 120 meters of water
depth. Data layers include: : multi-beam bathymetry, single-beam bathymetry, sidescan mosaics, sediment
analyses, resulting interpretative maps of habitat types, video and still imagery from submersible (human occupied
and remotely operated vehicles) dive transects and point counts (fish and habitat cover), and dive narratives.
The goal of OGIS is to provide interactive access to a variety of data sources that characterize fish populations and habitat
condition in the OHAPC, for use by fisheries managers, scientists and the general public. The Oculina_fish.shp
dataset includes dive narratives for fourteen "Clelia" dives conducted during the 2001 "Islands in the Stream" expedition. They include
information on coral cover, habitats seen, human impacts, and dominant megafaunal species visible in videotape records.
The dive narratives include references to relevant photo/video imagery (digital mpeg, jpeg or gif files), including the camera system used.
Separate metadata records describe the digital imagery captured from the videotapes. The OGIS access points for images are not precisely located,
but assigned to an estimated center location of the dive. The dive narratives give a general description of the habitat type during the dive
and fish populations on the whole dive. Ms. Jennifer Acuri reviewed the tapes and quantified them using level 1 REEF classification methods
(http:\\www.reef.org) to estimate the dominant megafaunal (fish and invertebrates) species.

A species list is provided in the original data files. Organisms identified by family, subfamily, genus, or
genus and species during the surveys are included in this metadata record using NODC methodology. Higher level taxonomy of species was completed,
and species synonyms were noted, FOR THIS METADATA RECORD ONLY using the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) in
conjunction with additional taxonomic and museum references as required. No originator data have been altered; higher level
taxonomy is added to selected biological metadata records as an aid to search engines which utilize metadata.

Data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed.
Each Clelia submersible dive narrative is designed to describe dominant fish species and habitat
types seen on video. All sub dives conducted during the 2001 Islands in the Stream expedition were described.
Position assigned to each point is an estimated center location of the dive. This was calculated based on the
complete dive track provided by the ship. The dive track is calculated using the ship's Differential GPS and a
slant-range positioning system that estimates bearing and range to the submersible; estimated accuracy of each
calculated position along the dive track is plus/minus 10 meters.
Depth recorded for each dive is taken directly from the submersible's depth recorder, which measures in increments
of 0.1 feet (3 cm).

Clelia Dive 615 Logs
Visual observations during the dive.
Ms. J. Arcuri reviewed source data (videotapes and written dive logs prepared by scientists in the submersible) and created narrative
files (1 per sub dive) that include: information on megafauana seen, habitat types, and other observations (e.g., trash).
Estimates of fish abundance are REEF level 1 criteria (www.reef.org).

Videotapes (mini-DV) collected with an underwater 3-chip CCD color video camera, deployed from the research
submersible, Clelia (owned by Harbor Branch Oceanographic nst.). Attribute table provides access to dive narrative
pdf files. Fish abundances were estimated using the REEF classification method. The designations are as follows:
S=single, F=few (2-10), M=many (11-100) A=abundant (>100).
