Title:
NOAA TIFF Image - NF12_PR_1002_bathy_8m.tif - Benthic Habitat Characterization - NOAA Ship Nancy Foster - M-I907-NF-12 (2012), UTM 20N NAD83 (NCEI Accession 0131856)
Abstract:
This image represents a 4 meter resolution bathymetry of a reef shelf/bank and the steep canyons and slopes of the NE Reserve, offshore of Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The M-I907-NF-12 survey was split into two sites: W00221 in the west and W00222 in the east. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the Northeast Grand Reserve from 4/08/2012 to 4/20/2012. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsburg Em 1002 echosounder (95 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum NAD83. The backscatter component of the bathymetry data were geometrically and radiometrically corrected using Hypack 2012 acquisition software. The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.

Why was the data set created?

This multibeam data was collected as IOCM (Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping) project M-I907-NF-12 during the ninth year of an ongoing NOAA scientific research mission in the US Caribbean to characterize midshelf and deep water coral reef habitats at depths down to 1,000 meters. The mission purpose is to better understand the resources within the surveyed reef habitats, and ultimately develop species utilization models linking physical habitats with biological information. The multibeam backscatter, multibeam bathymetry, and ground truth video footage collected during the 2012 mission will be used internally to characterize sea floor topography and to create benthic habitat maps, helping NOAA meet its mapping commitment to the US Coral Reef Task Force. The resulting publicly-distributed data is also a contribution to the greater scientific community interested in the USVI seafloor.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: Apr-2012 (process 1 of 4)
For this project, the Chief Scientist was NOAA/NOS/NCCOS/CCMA's Tim Battista and the Lead Hydrographer was independent contractor Mike Stecher. Data was collected aboard the NOAA ship Nancy Foster from 4/08/2012 to 4/20/2012, as project number M-I907-NF-12. Multibeam data was acquired in Simrad .hsx and .7k formats with hull-mounted Reson 7125 and Kongsberg Simrad EM 1002 multibeam echosounders (400 kHz). Simrad backscatter snippet collection was enabled. Line spacing for acquisition was three times the water depth, and data was retained out to 60 degrees from nadir, depending on project area. Heave, roll, pitch and heading correctors were collected using an Applanix POS/MV Model 320 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and associated Trimble GPS antennas. Sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Seabird Electronics SeaCat SBE19P CTD profiler and processed using Seabird Seaterm software. Positioning was obtained using Northstar 941X GPS receivers with differential correctors from U.S. Coast Guard CORS beacon Isabel, Puerto Rico. Data was reduced to Mean Lower-Low Water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS, based on National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON).
    Date: Apr-2012 (process 2 of 4)
Raw .hsx and .all data were converted and processed using CARIS HIPS v7.0 software, resulting in a CARIS HDCS format dataset with all correctors applied. Attitude and SWMB data was cleaned of fliers, and SWMB data was reviewed in subset mode by a NOAA contractor. Data sources used in this process:
    • M-I907-NF-12 HDCS Processed Multibeam Data
    Date: Oct-2012 (process 3 of 4)
After being submitted to CCMA by the contractor, CARIS HIPS v7.1 was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface (similar to a DTM), based on CUBE (Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator) from the processed HDCS data. A .BAG file (Bathymetric Attributed Grid) was exported from CARIS using the "BASE Surface to BAG" tool. Data sources used in this process:
    • M-I907-NF-12 BASE Surface
    Date: Oct-2012 (process 4 of 4)
The BAG file was opened in ArcMap 10 and exported as a GeoTIFF at 4m resolution.
  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
See Data Acquisition and Processing Report (DAPR) for M-I907-NF-12 (to be posted at http://ccma.nos.noaa.gov/products/biogeography/usvi_nps/documentation.aspx).
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
See Data Acquisition and Processing Report (DAPR) for M-I907-NF-12.
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
This GeoTIFF is sourced from a CARIS gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data was used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution CARIS BASE (Bathymetry Associated with Statistical Error) surface grid with a best depth component. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the ESRI Grid. Some positional shifts may have occurred between the original data points and the transformed grid.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
While the project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on project area and depth, all users should independently analyze the dataset according to their own needs and standards to determine data usability.
