What does this data set describe?

Title:
NOAA TIFF Image - 10m Bathymetry Mosaic, South Atlantic Bight - Deep Coral Priority Areas - NOAA Ron Brown - (2010), UTM 17N NAD83
Abstract:
This dataset contains a unified GeoTiff with 10x10 meter cell size representing the bathymetry (depth) of several deep coral priority areas off the South Atlantic Bight, derived from data collected in November 2010. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Branch, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster, as well as federal, university, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data off the South Atlantic Bight from 11/13/2010 to 11/22/2010. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad EM 122 multibeam echosounder (100 kHz). It was processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Attitude and sound velocity correctors applied to the data. Verified tides were not applied to the data, leaving the depth values referenced to the ellipsoid. The imagery is projected in the UTM Zone 17 north, NAD83 datum. The backscatter component of the bathymetry data were geometrically and radiometrically corrected using Geocoder 3.x software. Acoustic backscatter mosaics are ostensibly an important piece of information when characterizing surficial seafloor features and delineating benthic habitats.

Why was the data set created?

This multibeam data was collected as part of a mulitagency cooperative deep-sea coral investigation aboard the NOAA Ship Nancy Foster. The multibeam component of the cruise was intended to both provide fine scale acoustic imagery of known deep coral sites, as well as serve as an exploratory tool for identifying potential new habitat areas.

  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2011 (process 1 of 3)
For this project, data was collected aboard the NOAA ship Nancy Foster from 11/13/2010 to 11/22/2010. Multibeam data were acquired in .all format with a hull-mounted Kongsberg Simrad 122 ER multibeam echosounder (100 kHz). Backscatter snippet collection was enabled. Line spacing for acquisition was three times the water depth, and data was retained out to 60 degrees from nadir. Heave, roll, pitch and heading correctors were collected using an Applanix POS/MV Model 320 V4 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and associated Trimble GPS antennas. Sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Seabird Electronics SeaCat SBE19P CTD profiler and processed using NOAA's Velocwin V8.85 software, then applied directly to the raw data. Positioning was obtained using Trimble Zephyr GPS receivers.
    Date: 2011 (process 2 of 3)
Raw .all data were converted and processed using CARIS HIPS & Sips 7.0 software, resulting in a CARIS HDCS format dataset with all correctors applied. Attitude and SWMB data was cleaned of fliers, and SWMB data was reviewed in subset mode by a NOAA contractor. Data sources used in this process:
    • Raw Multibeam Data
    Date: 2011 (process 3 of 3)
CARIS HIPS v6.0 was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface (similar to a DTM), based on weighted swath angle, from the processed HDCS data. Then CARIS export tool "BASE Surface to Image" was used to export a GeoTiff in NAD83 UTM zone 17N. Data sources used in this process:
    • HDCS Processed Multibeam Data
  3. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
This GeoTiff is sourced from a CARIS gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data was used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution CARIS BASE (Bathymetry Associated with Statistical Error) surface grid with a best depth component. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the ESRI Grid. Some positional shifts may have occurred between the original data points and the transformed grid.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
Even though the survey was conducted to meet IHO standards, all users should independently analyze the dataset according to their own needs and standards to determine data usability.
