Description:
Abstract:
This dataset contains a GeoTIFF with 4x4 meter cell size representing the rugosity of the steep slopes and canyons of the Northeast Grand Reserve off the coast of Fajardo, Puerto Rico. The M-I907-NF-12 survey was split into two sites: W00221 in the west and W00222 in the east. NOAA's NOS/NCCOS/CCMA Biogeography Team, in collaboration with NOAA vessel Nancy Foster and territory, federal, and private sector partners, acquired multibeam bathymetry data in the Northeast Grand Reserve from 4/08/2012 to 4/20/2012. Data was acquired with a hull-mounted Kongsburg Em 1002 echosounder (95 kHz) and processed by a NOAA contractor using CARIS HIPS software. Data has all correctors applied (attitude, sound velocity) and has been reduced to mean lower low water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS. Data is in UTM zone 20 north, datum NAD83. The backscatter component of the bathymetry data were geometrically and radiometrically corrected using Hypack 2012 acquisition software. The project was conducted to meet IHO Order 1 and 2 accuracy standards, dependant on the project area and depth. All users should individually evaluate the suitability of this data according to their own needs and standards.Rugosity was derived from this surface using NOAA's Benthic Terrain Modeler extension.
Purpose:
This multibeam data was collected as IOCM (Integrated Ocean and Coastal Mapping) project M-I907-NF-12 during the ninth year of an ongoing NOAA scientific research mission in the US Caribbean to characterize midshelf and deep water coral reef habitats at depths down to 1,000 meters. The mission purpose is to better understand the resources within the surveyed reef habitats, and ultimately develop species utilization models linking physical habitats with biological information. The multibeam backscatter, multibeam bathymetry, and ground truth video footage collected during the 2012 mission will be used internally to characterize sea floor topography and to create benthic habitat maps, helping NOAA meet its mapping commitment to the US Coral Reef Task Force. The resulting publicly-distributed data is also a contribution to the greater scientific community interested in the USVI seafloor.

This GeoTIFF is sourced from a CARIS gridded dataset. The original full-resolution multibeam data was used to create a downsampled uniform-resolution CARIS BASE (Bathymetry Associated with Statistical Error) surface grid with a best depth component. The downsampled grid nodes from that depth surface were then exported and used to generate the ESRI Grid. Some positional shifts may have occurred between the original data points and the transformed grid.

Process_Description:
For this project, the Chief Scientist was NOAA/NOS/NCCOS/CCMA's Tim Battista and the Lead Hydrographer was independent contractor Mike Stecher. Data was collected aboard the NOAA ship Nancy Foster from 4/08/2012 to 4/20/2012, as project number M-I907-NF-12. Multibeam data was acquired in Simrad .hsx and .7k formats with hull-mounted Reson 7125 and Kongsberg Simrad EM 1002 multibeam echosounders (400 kHz). Simrad backscatter snippet collection was enabled. Line spacing for acquisition was three times the water depth, and data was retained out to 60 degrees from nadir, depending on project area. Heave, roll, pitch and heading correctors were collected using an Applanix POS/MV Model 320 inertial measurement unit (IMU) and associated Trimble GPS antennas. Sound velocity profiles were acquired with a Seabird Electronics SeaCat SBE19P CTD profiler and processed using Seabird Seaterm software. Positioning was obtained using Northstar 941X GPS receivers with differential correctors from U.S. Coast Guard CORS beacon Isabel, Puerto Rico. Data was reduced to Mean Lower-Low Water (MLLW) using final approved tides from NOAA COOPS, based on National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON).

Process_Description:
Raw .hsx and .all data were converted and processed using CARIS HIPS v7.0 software, resulting in a CARIS HDCS format dataset with all correctors applied. Attitude and SWMB data was cleaned of fliers, and SWMB data was reviewed in subset mode by a NOAA contractor.

Process_Description:
After being submitted to CCMA by the contractor, CARIS HIPS v7.1 was used to generate a CARIS BASE surface (similar to a DTM), based on CUBE (Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetry Estimator) from the processed HDCS data. A .BAG file (Bathymetric Attributed Grid) was exported from CARIS using the "BASE Surface to BAG" tool.

Process_Description:
An ESRI grid of source bathymetry was input into the Rugosity Builder Tool, a component of the ArcGIS Benthic Terrain Modeler (BTM). The BTM tool, a collection of ArcGIS terrain visualization tools developed by the Oregon State University (OSU) Department of Geosciences and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center, calculated the rugosity of that bathymetric grid based on an algorithm developed by Jeff Jenness. A short summary of the process, quoted directly from the BTM's documentation, is as follows: "...rugosity derivation relies, in part, on a neighborhood analysis using a 4 grid cell by 4 grid cell neighborhood. An algorithm is passed through the Raster Map Algebra Operation object within Spatial Analyst that calculates the planar distance between the center point of the center cell and of each of the eight surrounding cells in the neighborhood. Next, using the Pythagorean Theorem, the surface distance is calculated for each planar distance using the difference in elevation between the cells. The result of this function is sixteen separate grid data sets with each cell value equal to this surface distance. The next step in the process is to calculate the area formed by three adjacent sides. The result is eight triangular surface area grids. These grid datasets are combined to obtain a surface area data set for the input bathymetric data set. The final step in the process is to create a data set that represents the ratio of surface area to planar area. This final data set represents rugosity for the study area." More information on the specific algorithms used, and contact points for questions, can be found in the BTM's documentation.Rugosity values near 1 represent flat smooth terrain, while higher values reflect increasing rugosity or terrain roughness. For rugosity grid interpretation, is recommended that the grid be reclassified according to standard deviation divisions.
