Title:
CRED Benthic Habitat Towboard Still Photos from Kingman Atoll in March and April, 2004
Description:
Abstract:
This data is in the form of JPEG still photos taken every 15 seconds from a benthic habitat towboard being towed by small boats at Kingman Island between March 26 and April 5, 2004. The towboard is operated by a SCUBA diver who maintains the camera approximately 1 meter above the bottom while being towed behind a small boat for a 50-minute tow. Depth of the water is between 0-25 meters, and the tows are completed in forereef, backreef, and lagoon habitats. The digital photos are taken by a Canon EOS 10-D camera with a 20-mm lens, using a remote control attachment to fire the camera automatically every 15 seconds. There are approximately 200 pictures on each CD-rom, which represent the photos from one 50-minute tow. Photo dimensions, if printed, would be 108.37 cm wide by 72.25 cm tall. The resolution at "Draft" quality (the lowest) is 72 pixels/inch. The resolution at "Best" quality (the highest) is 266 pixels/inch. System requirements for viewing the photos are any PC, Mac, or other operating system with software installed to view JPEG images such as Adobe Photoshop, ACDSee, Quicktime, Canon Digital Camera File Viewer Utility or other photo viewing software. Each photo is approximately 2 megabytes. With just over 200 images per cd, each cd is approximately 400 megabytes. These CD-roms are currently stored at the Kewalo Research Facility in Honolulu, HI and copies are kept at a storage unit in Kaimuki, several miles away from the Kewalo facility.
Purpose:
Photos are taken of the bottom to document the benthic habitat. The photos are analyzed at the Kewalo Research Facility in Honolulu to determine percent cover of benthic substrates and the organisms covering the bottom. Data from the analysis of these photos will be input as another metadata record, hopefully linked to this one. Information on the coral reef benthic habitat in the U.S. affiliated Pacific Island areas is used for making decisions on the ecosystem management of these regions.
