Abstract:
The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) experimental daily global 5 km (0.05 degree exactly) satellite coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring product suite described here is a new-generation version of CRW's current operational twice-weekly global 50 km (0.5 degree exactly) satellite coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring product suite. The high-resolution 5 km suite currently includes Sea Surface Temperature (SST), SST Anomaly, Coral Bleaching HotSpots, coral bleaching Degree Heating Weeks (DHW), and Bleaching Alert Area products, matching the core operational 50 km satellite products. The 5 km product suite provides two major improvements over the current operational 50 km product suite. Firstly, a new-generation SST analysis, the NOAA/NESDIS operational 5 km Blended SST analysis, is used for deriving the high-resolution coral bleaching monitoring product suite. This new-generation SST analysis has significantly improved data density and spatial and temporal resolutions derived from multiple polar-orbiting and geostationary satellites, as well as improved satellite SST quality from new-generation SST algorithms. Secondly, an improved climatology derived from a recently reprocessed historical SST data set is applied. This experimental daily global 5 km coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring product suite, originally released in June 2012, significantly advances CRW's capability for near-real-time satellite coral bleaching thermal stress monitoring. The new 5 km products will comprise the core of CRW's new-generation Decision Support System (DSS) for coral reef ecosystem management after it is fully evaluated and improved, if necessary. With higher spatial and temporal resolution products, CRW can now provide service at or close to reef-scales. After further evaluation of the 5 km product suite, CRW's decades-old operational 50 km product suite, which has provided pioneer service to global coral reef research and management communities, will be retired. This 5 km product suite is expected to undergo continuous improvements over the next few years. CRW will continue to produce the current operational 50 km product suite until the 5 km product suite becomes operational. There will be some differences between the two product suites in certain areas, and user discretion is advised. However, the expectation is that the 5 km high-resolution product suite will be more accurate, in general, due to the improved data quality, density, and spatial and temporal resolutions.
Purpose:
The NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) mission is to utilize remote sensing, modeled, and in situ tools for near-real-time and long term monitoring, modeling and reporting of physical environmental conditions of coral reef ecosystems. A suite of monitoring and prediction products, including this product, has been developed by CRW as a decision support system (DSS) to provide critical and timely coral reef environment information to the U.S. and international coral reef communities.

Process_Description:
The level of coral bleaching thermal stress at a data grid presented in the Bleaching Alert Area product is determined by the values of Degree Heating Weeks and Coral Bleaching HotSpots at the data grid. A Degree Heating Week is calculated as the accumulation of Coral Bleaching HotSpots over 12 consecutive weeks. At each pixel, a coral bleaching threshold SST value is subtracted from the near-real-time SST value measured to produce the Coral Bleaching HotSpot. CRW's SST Anomaly is also derived based on this 5 km Blended SST analysis.
