Abstract:

Feeding biology of the introduced fish roi (Cephalopholis argus), and its impact on Hawaiian reef fishes and fisheries between January 2004 and January 2005. Roi were collected from 27 sites on Oahu and the Kona coast of the Island of Hawaii to study various aspects of their physiology. Data include laboratory examinations on specimens speared in the field and raised in tanks.

Purpose:

Study was performed to understand the impact of roi, an introduced species, on Hawaiian reef fishes and fisheries.

Supplemental_Information:

These sites were surveyed using SCUBA equipment. Data was analyzed in the laboratory. The project was launched by the Hawaii Coral Reef Initiative at the Hawaii Cooperative Fishery Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Process_Description:

Field studies were conducted on Oahu and the Big Island by divers. Fish specimen were caught for laboratory analysis. Fish were measured and weighed using basic measuring tape and weight scales. MIA tests run to check for Ciguatera. Three tests were run per fish, one with tissue from the head of the fish, one from the belly, and one from the tail. Fish in tanks were utilized to examine feeding, digestion, and decomposition.
