Description:
Abstract:
Broward County Florida has responsibility for the resource management of coral reefs in marine waters adjacent to Broward County. The Department of Planning and Environmental Protection is assigned the duties of monitoring the health of the coral reefs. Environmental stresses are a limiting factor in the biomass and diversity, and maintaining these populations of coral species requires an understanding of the environmental factors. One of these factors is the water temperature. Visual surveys are conducted by divers, and the staff has implemented an environmental monitoring program with water temperature as the first measured parameter. The monitoring program is on a "not to interfere basis" using self-recording thermographs for data acquisition. The thermographs are placed along coral reef tracks located in three separate bands near the northern most extent of the natural range for corals. The raw data are captured from the recorder by means of a laptop computer using transfer and conversion software provided by the instrument's vendor. Upon return to the office, the raw data are transferred to separate files that are then loaded into spreadsheet files. Each spreadsheet file corresponds to a single location and only one instrument. Twelve spreadsheet files are updated every sixty days for the dynamic raw data; the static geographical information is stored in a separate spreadsheet file.
Purpose:
These data collection efforts support the management and monitoring of coral reefs resources in marine waters adjacent to Broward County, Florida.
Supplemental_Information:
Duplicate comma-separated (.csv) versions of the original Micrososft spreadsheet files were created at the NOAA National Oceanographic Data (NODC) for permanent archival purposes and stored in the 1-data subdirectory of this dataset. No original data is altered at the NODC.

Overview_Description:
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
Data are in twelve spreadsheet files formatted in rows and columns. Each spreadsheet contains three worksheets; (1) Headers, (2) Stats and (3) Data. On the Headers worksheet, data columns are in the following order: LocationID, Start, Recover, Data Source, Recorder ID, Deploy No, State, Span, Interval, Samples, Delay, Trip Average, Trip Std Dev, Window, and Extremes. LocationID = The code that identifies the location of the instrument. Start = The date and time a series of observations began (i.e. dd/mmm/yyyy hh:mm:ss). Recover = The ending date and time for a series of observations (i.e. dd/mmm/yyyy hh:mm:ss). Data Source = The file containing the original data. Recorder ID = serial number of the recorder unit. Deploy No = sequential number indicating the number of times deployed. State = upon recovery of the unit, the status of the recorder at the time of recovery. Span = The range of days and hours of observations. Interval = recorder setting for the sampling rate. Samples = The number of samples obtained during the observation period. Delay = user setting at time of deployment for the delay requested before the recording begins. Trip Average = two entries for the mean value in degrees Celsius and degrees Fahrenheit. Trip Std Dev = the computed value for the standard deviation in degree Celsius and degree Fahrenheit. Window = the dynamic range of the thermometer in degree Fahrenheit and degree Celsius. Extremes = minimum and maximum values measured during the deployment. On the Stats worksheet, the computed values from the next Data worksheet are displayed. The data columns are presented in the following order: LocationID = the code that identifies the location of the instrument, Month/Year = identifies the month and year, TF Avg = average temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, TF Stdev = the computed value of the standard deviation in degrees Fahrenheit, TF Min = minimum temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, TF Max = the maximum temperature in degrees Fahrenheit, TC Avg = average temperature in degrees Celsius, TC Stdev = computed standard deviation in degrees Celsius, TC min = minimum temperature in degrees Celsius, TC max = maximum temperature in degrees Celsius, and N = number of observations used to compute the mean and stadard deviation. On the Data worksheet, data columns are in the following order: LocationID, Date/Time (loc), Temperature (F), Temperature (C). LocationID = The code that identifies the location of the instrument. Date/Time (loc) = The local date and time of the temperature mesurement (i.e. dd/mmm/yyyy hh:mm:ss). Tfarenheit = The temperature of the sea water in degrees Fahrenheit. Tcelsius = The temperature of the sea water in degrees Celsius. A companion spreadsheet file contains the geographic location of each recorder. The fields in the file are in the following order: Name = the code of the location, Description = provides common names by municipality and reef track, Latitude = the decimal degree value of the location, Longitude = the decimal degree value of the location, X = the state plane coordinate in the horizontal orientation, and Y = the state plane coordinate in the vertical orientation.
