CREWS Standard (CREWS-STD) buoys are equipped to measure sea surface water temperature and conductivity (Sea-Bird Model SBE37-SM, Sea-Bird Electronics, Inc., www.seabird.com) at 1 m (nominal) below the water line and air temperature (R.M Young Model 41342); barometric pressure (Heise DXD and wind vectors (Vaisala WAS425A) at 2 m (nominal) above the water line. A compass (KVH C100 SE-25) is used in the calculation of wind direction and a GPS system provides geolocation. CREWS-STD buoys telemeter hourly data in near-real-time (NRT). Data telemetry serves to alert researchers to the potential of imminent or ongoing coral reef bleaching or other natural events (hurricanes, storm damage, cooling, etc.) so that additional field observations and data collection efforts can be initiated, if warranted. NRT data is available at https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/pacific-islands/ecosystems/coral-reefs-pacific and is updated on a daily basis. When a buoy is recovered, a higher resolution (typically a 1800 second sampling interval) dataset is uploaded from the buoy's Environmental Data Logger (EDL). Please contact CRED with any questions. For program information see the web site https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/pacific-islands/ecosystems/coral-reefs-pacific
Monitoring of oceanographic and meteorological conditions provides information about environmental factors influencing coral reef ecosystems.
Platform Manufacturer: Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI), Platform Model: CREWS-STD, Platform Serial Number: 262005; Instrument Manufacturer: Sound Ocean Systems, Inc. (SOSI), Instrument Model: CREWS-EDL, Instrument Serial Number: 262005. This record refers to dataset(s) recovered from the buoy's Environmental Data Logger (EDL). The data format may be individual data files, each corresponding to a sensor. Alternatively, the datafiles may be concatenated together in one large file. Early versions of the EDL supplied data in a daily log format. All time/date is indexed to UTC. Data is supplied in ASCII format. Units of measure are as follows: Wind vector (u and v components): meters/sec. The wind and compass will be turned on and time averaged 3 times an hour. The start times will be xx10, xx30, and xx50. Each time average will be made from 40 samples, where the sampling rate is .37 Hz, and each sample is expressed as a vector relative to magnetic north. The vector, as expressed in rectangular form has a North/South and an East/West component. Note the vector points toward the source of the wind; Compass (magnetic): degrees; Air temperature (sun shielded): degrees Celsius; Barometric pressure (wind shielded port): milliBar; Sea surface temperature: degrees Celsius; Sea surface conductivity: Siemens/meter; Battery Voltage: Volts. Note that the compass heading is the direction that the buoy happens to be oriented when the compass is sampled. The value is used for instrument testing purposes only. Instrument Specifications: .
