Benthic habitat maps of the nearshore marine environment of Pamyra Atoll were created by visual interpretation of remotely sensed imagery. The objective of this effort, conducted by NOAA's Center for Coastal Monitoring and Assessment - Biogeography Branch in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Analytical Laboratories of Hawaii (ALH), was to provide spatially-explicit information on the habitat types, biological cover and live coral cover of Palmyra Atoll's coral reef ecosystem. 0.61m panchromatic and 2.44m multi-spectral data from the QuickBird 2 satellite sensor were purchased for the mapping area. Photo-interpreters accurately and reliably delineated boundaries of features from this QuickBird 2 imagery as they appeared on the computer monitor using a software interface.
This terrestrial mosaic product was provided in order to be displayed over a deglinted seafloor mosaic so that the terrestrial features are also discernible. This product was also provided to The Nature Conservancy to support terrestrial vegetation mapping that may be pursued in the future.

The satellite imaging company DigitalGlobe, Inc. provided raw, NITF files for four multispectral bands and a panchromatic file, along with rational polynomial coefficients (RPC's) for the five scenes.
Bands 1 - 7: PCI OrthoEngine Pansharpening module was employed to create a high-resolution color image to be used for visual interpretation by NOAA scientists. It was applied to the QuickBird 2 imagery to increase the spatial resolution of the 2.44 m multispectral data to the panchromatic data resolution of 0.61 m.

Bands 1 - 7: Geo-referencing of the imagery was performed using PCI OrthoEngine module. The pansharpened PIX (PCI Geomatica native format) files were orthorectified using stereo ground control point positioning along with the Rational Functions model extracted from the original NITF files.
