Effects of trap fishing on coral reefs and associated habitats in the US Caribbean [Project:trap_impacts_studiesCarib.mxd]
vector digital data
We are conducting surveys of trap distributions, targeted habitats, trap damage to coral reefs and associated habitats, and spatial/temporal distribution of catches. Field work was conducted with local partners: FWCC in Florida Keys; UPR-M in Puerto Rico (included in this data set); and USVI Fish and Wildlife Division in US Virgin Islands (included in this data set).
The goal is to assess whether trap fishing is damaging coral reef organisms and if so, to what extent.

Investigators conducted boat-based surveys per prescribed methodology to locate surface buoys attached to traps, targeting either fish or lobster. Locations of trap buoys were recorded with a handheld GPS. A subset of traps were surveyed by SCUBA divers to assess damage to habitats or structural organisms including hard and soft corals, sponges, alga, and seagrasses. Location data were plotted in GIS project with habitat layers from NOAA Benthic Habitat Maps.
