Title:
American Samoa Reef Macroinvertebrate Inventory, 1992, (NODC Accession 9900054)
Abstract:
This data set includes data from a 1992 survey of the American Samoa coral reef ecosystem, collected as part of the American Samoa Coastal Resources Inventory (ASCRI), partly funded by Sea Grant. This component of the study focuses on a systematic inventory of conspicuous marine macroinvertebrate observations. Coral reefs of American Samoa support a diverse fauna of benthic invertebrates other than scleractinian corals that is characteristic of the tropical Indo-West Pacific region delineated by Ekman (1953). Sponges, nonscleractinian cnidarians, molluscs, and echinoderms comprised the major elements of the 83 species of conspicuous, epibenthicinvertebrates recorded in this survey. Sampling methods employed in this survey were adapted to gather maximum qualitative data within a finite timeframe. Therefore, highly motile and cryptic species of invertebrates are under-represented in the information presented herein, and infaunal invertebrates are excluded. These data are filed were filed at the National Oceanographic Data Center under NODC Accession #9900054.
Supplemental_Information:
The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) was utilized as an aid to complete upper level species classifications FOR THIS METADATA RECORD ONLY by the NODC to aid in the development of search engines. No original data was altered at the NODC.

    Taxonomic_Completeness:
Sampling methods employed in this survey were adapted to gather maximum qualitative data within a finite timeframe. Therefore, highly motile and cryptic species of invertebrates are under-represented in the information presented herein, and infaunal invertebrates are excluded. Two species of sponges occurred in all seven areas designated in this survey. The demosponge Stylotella agminata was conspicuous because of its size (up to some 20 cm) and bright orange color. Because of the complexity of sponge taxonomy, the second wide-ranging species is tentatively identified as a calcarean sponge. Placement of this species in the Class Calcarea is based on the following morphological characteristics: sponge solitary or compound; rounded; surface even, texture prickly; bright citrus yellow in color. Examination of spicule morphology and composition would be required for more specific identification. Alcyonacean corals were the predominant benthic invertebrates in terms of total biomass. The taxonomy of soft corals, like that of sponges, is dependent to a considerable degree on the morphology of skeletal spicules embedded in structural tissues. Such microscopic examination of tissues was beyond the scope of this survey. Therefore, soft corals were treated as species complexes for the purposes of this report.

Why was the data set created?

To provide a systematic inventory of conspicuous marine macroinvertebrate observations in the American Samoa coral reef ecosystem.

How was the data set created?

  1. What methods were used to collect the data?
    Method 0 of 1
    Type: Field
Conspicuous, epibenthic macroinvertebrates other than scleractinian corals were quantified by a diver swimming along the 18-m (60-ft) isobath for a specified time period (usually 30 min) and then in the opposite direction along the 6-m (20-ft) isobath. Clonal organisms, such as alcyonaceans, actiniarians, and didemnid ascidians, were counted as individuals when no tissue connected adjacent colonies. For colonial organisms, counts represent the number of colonies observed, but do not provide any estimate of the numbers of individuals within the colonies nor the percent surface area of the colonies. For the purposes of this inventory, determination of the relative abundance of macroinvertebrates was based on the mean number of organisms observed during each dive. Therefore, the total number of observations for each taxon was divided by the duration of the dive. Relative abundance was then indexed as follows: D = Dominant; species is the predominant taxon in terms of percent surface cover in a given habitat A = Abundant; the mean number of individuals observed was equal to or greater than 2.5/min C = Common; the mean number of individuals observed was greater than 0.25/min, but less than 2.5/min O = Occasional; two or more individuals were encountered, and the mean number of individuals observed was less than 0.25/min R = Rare; only one individual was observed during the dive.
  2. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  3. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 31-Dec-1992 (process 1 of 1)

  4. What similar or related data should the user be aware of?

How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Sampling methods employed in this survey were adapted to gather maximum qualitative data within a finite timeframe. Therefore, highly motile and cryptic species of invertebrates are under-represented in the information presented herein, and infaunal invertebrates are excluded.
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
Geographic location of sites as determined by Magellan NAV 1000 global positioning system: too few satellites could be contacted to obtain fixes at other sites. Note that data for Sites 16, 17, 22, and 25 are given to the nearest second of a degree; data for the remaining sites are given to the nearest 0.01 minute.
