Title: Waianae Ecological Characterization Oahu, Hawaii 2004
Abstract:
The Waianae Ecological Characterization is a digital synthesis of historical and current physical, ecological, and cultural information about the Waianae moku, which is located on the leeward coast of the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. The characterization emphasizes coastal resource management practices and challenges of the Waianae moku. It includes narratives, videos, images, graphics, interviews, stories, chants, subject bibliographies, over 100 geographic information system (GIS) data layers, and several interactive GIS map projects and printable maps. In addition, it introduces a GIS-based tool, called the Nonpoint Source Pollution and Erosion Comparison Tool, to assist resource managers in the assessment of potential impacts of land use change on water quality as a result of impervious surfaces, runoff, sedimentation, and other factors. The Waianae Ecological Characterization was developed by the Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program, in partnership with the NOAA Coastal Services Center and the NOAA Pacific Services Center. Funding was provided by the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program. The characterization is available in its entirety on CD-ROM; limited portions are available on the Internet.
Supplemental_Information:
This metadata record was written to represent the Waianae Ecological Characterization project as a whole. GIS data compiled and created as part of the project are included on the characterization CD-ROM for use with desktop GIS software and each layer has its own metadata record. These metadata records should be referred to for specific information regarding the spatial datasets.

Why was the data set created?

The Waianae Ecological Characterization was developed to promote the understanding and discussion of complex natural resource issues in the Waianae moku, and to provide a unique and effective tool for the Waianae community to use in their development of a sustainable watershed-based management plan.

How was the data set created?

  1. From what previous works were the data drawn?
  2. How were the data generated, processed, and modified?
    Date: 2004 (process 1 of 1)
Information for this project was gathered from various published sources, gray literature, and interviews, and developed into content for the characterization CD-ROM and Web site. Content was reviewed by project partners for general accuracy. The content was also edited by a professional copy editor.

Spatial data used in this project were obtained primarily from the Hawaii Statewide GIS Program. Datasets were then organized into personal geodatabases by subject or theme area for the characterization by the Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program. The Hawaii Coastal Zone Management Program also created customized ArcGIS project files (.mxd files), GIS tutorials, and static maps using these spatial data. These processes were done 2002-2004. How reliable are the data; what problems remain in the data set?

  1. How well have the observations been checked?
  2. How accurate are the geographic locations?
  3. How accurate are the heights or depths?
  4. Where are the gaps in the data? What is missing?
Attempts were made to include all information and data deemed relevant to coastal and marine resource management for the project study area (the Waianae moku).
  5. How consistent are the relationships among the observations, including topology?
GIS data included in the characterization were checked for general spatial/geographic logic and consistency.

How can someone get a copy of the data set?
