Description:
  • Abstract:
    • These data are the result of a multi-beam echosounder survey conducted in the OHAPC by the M/V Liberty Star in October 2002.
Two forms of data are available: 1) geotifs available through the on-line OGIS (www.uncw.edu/oculina) on the OGIS CD, and from CoRIS (See Network Resource),
and 2) XYZ ASCII format data for the high-resolution bathymetry, available through CoRIS. Although requested in
the original contract, backscatter in the form of raw X-Y-Amplitude data was not recorded during the survey. The data presented in the Oculina Banks Geographic
Information System (OGIS) was collected as part of a cooperative project between: the National Oceanographic and
Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Undersea Research Program, NOAA Fisheries (also primary sponsor of OGIS),
NOAA Ocean Service, NOAA Ocean Exploration Program, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)-- Coastal and Marine Geology
Program, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) and Florida State University. An Oculina Geographic Information Sys/tem (OGIS) provides a comprehensive,
interactive data source for the Oculina Banks Habitat Area of Particular Concern (OHAPC), a marine protected area off
the east coast of Florida in 70 to 120 meters of water depth. Data layers include: : multi-beam bathymetry,
single-beam bathymetry, sidescan mosaics, sediment analyses, resulting interpretative maps of habitat types,
video and still imagery from submersible (human occupied and remotely operated vehicles) dive transects and point
counts (fish and habitat cover), and dive narratives.

  • Purpose:
    • The goal of OGIS is to provide interactive access to a variety of data sources that characterize fish populations and habitat
condition in the OHAPC, for use by fisheries managers, scientists and the general public. The 2002 multi-beam survey provides
the highest resolution bathymetric map ever acoustically recorded in the OHAPC. Survey products will be used to 1) assess topographic and habitat
change in the OHAPC over time, and 2) accurately position past in situ underwater observations, and guide future sampling and dives, e.g., grab
samples, ROV transects, and submersible dives.

  • Supplemental_Information:
    • The survey was supported by Seafloor Systems, Inc., Portland, (www.seafloorsystems.com) Oregon using a Reson Seabat 8101
multi-beam system. The survey was funded by NOAA Fisheries www.sefsc.noaa.gov) and overseen by the NOAA Undersea Research Center
      at UNCW (www.uncw.edu/nurc).

  • Data are believed to be logically consistent, though no tests were performed.
Completeness_Report:
  • The initial surveys produced an extremely large dataset (62 CDs) of raw data in Caris' cross-track format. To create the geotifs presented in the OGIS, this data set was reduced by post-survey processing including: corrections for sound velocity and tidal stage, removal of outliers and data gaps, and calculation and assignment of mean values for 3m X 3m cells throughout the survey area.

Lineage:
  • Process_Step:
    • Process_Description:
The bathymetry and backscatter data were collected along a continuous swath perpendicular to the direction of the ship using a Reson Seabat 8101 multibeam sonar system. The data are cleaned of bad navigation and depth readings. The depth readings are gridded into a common grid. The gridded data are converted to an XYZ ASCII format file (Longitude, Latitude, Attribute). Unfortunately, the raw backscatter were not saved during the survey-- only geotifs of the side-scan sonar data. The multi-beam system was mated to a Differential GPS unit, DMSO 5 TSS motion sensor (quantified heave, pitch and roll), and a SG Brown gyrocompass (measures yaw). HYPACK navigation system was used to maintain vessel course throughout the survey. Sensor data were compiled in ISIS Shipboard Data Acquisition and Image Processing System and initially logged to .xtf data files. Files were post-processed using CARIS software to remove outliers, correct for sound velocity and tidal stage.
