Description:
Project Manager:
Adrienne Loerzel
Project Years:
2015
Project Summary:
The project will use an existing coral program contract mechanism with Horsley-Witten, which has successfully hosted erosion control workshops on Guam in 2012 and also developed island-specific erosion control materials including a popular Guam field guide. For this project, Horsley-Witten will update and reprint the field guide, deliver a workshop and develop three modules for integration into the local construction industry’s education programs at the Guam Contractors Association Trades Academy. The first module will be targeted at entry level workers and will feature 15 hours of material, including some field demonstrations for setting silt fences and other common management practices. This module will be integrated into core coursework and is expected to reach an average of 120 students annually, though recent enrollment numbers have gone as high as 240 for some cycles. The final two modules will be tailored to construction site managers and supervisors and will be included in additional courses that are commonly taken be industry workers. To ensure that local partners are familiar with the material and to prepare instructors, Horsley-Witten also will conduct a 3-4 day training session with an emphasis on the trainers who will ultimately be responsible for delivering this material to students. The session will be open to industry, government and non-profit partners to maximize exposure to current techniques and the updates available since the first training was held in 2012.
Expected Outcome:
This project will allow more Guam government and industry partners to receive erosion and sediment control training including the latest updates based on deployment of various BMPs in Guam and in similar environments. The workshop, which will likely be offered to government regulatory agencies, contracting company supervisors and designing engineers, and other watershed management professionals, will also train GCA Trades Academy instructors to offer similar educational opportunities locally. The project also will create three training modules for use the Trades Academy core curriculum, project management and project supervision courses. After an initial pilot phase where the modules are provided to one cycle of students, the material will be refined and permanently integrated into the courses. The instructors will be trained during the first workshop and will consult with Horsley-Witten, NOAA and local government partners as necessary during the pilot phase to modify the material if necessary to meet local needs.
