This data set was centralized for the Marine Gap Analysis Project of the Hawaii Natural Heritage Program. It was obtained from various principle investigators for a multitude of projects. It includes surveys from 183 locations on the eight main Hawaiian Islands. The data were placed in a relational database.
Each component of this data set had a unique objective. It was used by the Hawaii Natural Heritage Program for marine gap analysis.

Most methodologies used were unique to the individual project. Very little information is available on methodology. There are some notes given in file ../../data/FishInfo.(doc or txt).
Original files provided by the Hawaii Natural Heritage Program: FishInfo.doc This is an MS Word document with metadata regarding each contribution to this dataset. A redundant ASCII copy was placed in file FishInfo.txt. Fishdb_Data_References.doc Similar to FishINfo.doc, this file provides information about the data originators and their projects NODCfishmod.mdb (under data/original) This is an MS Access relational database containing the data. Each table in the database was exported into an MS Excel (97-2000) and subsequently into a Comma Separated Version (CSV) ASCII file. Parameters of each table are summariezed below. Table: All_Location Loc_ID: Numerical identifier for location Study_site: Text name of site Lat_dd: latitude in decimal degrees Long_dd: longitude in decimal degrees Island: Name of Hawaiian Island Area_Desc: Comments on the survey site Comments: Additional pertinent comments Table: Current Species List TAXONID: Mixed sources, Unique ID for each fish TAXON_NAME: Most recent taxonomy SPECIES TYPE: General Taxonomic Group Family type: FAMILY: Taxonomic family FAMCODE: Number key for each family HAWAIIAN_NAME: COMMON_NAME: TROPHIC: Trophic status: C = Coralivore, D = Detritivore, H = Herbivore, MI = Mobile Invert, P = Piscivore, SI = Sessile Invert, Z = Planktivore Status E = Endemic, I = Introduced, N = Native, IN = Invasive A: Biomass values B: Biomass values Table: Maui_SP_Loc UniqueID: unique identifier for this table Survey: survey number TransectRunID: transect run ID number Number: Study Site: Date: survey date Depth: survey depth (M) TAXONID: Link to Current Species Table LOC_ID: Link to All_Location Table Table: Misc_SP_Loc UniqueID: unique identifier for this table Survey: Date: Time: Survey_Ref: Transect: TransectRunID: Observer ID: Orig_ID: TaxonID: Link to Current Species Table Number: Comment: Morph: LOC_ID: Link to All_Location Table Note, redundant MS Excel and ASCII text files were made of each table.
