Abstract:
"NOAAs Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP), in partnership with the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), is leading an effort to incorporate social and economic monitoring into the national monitoring plan for US coral reef jurisdictions. The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP) is a strategic framework for conducting sustained observations of biological, climate and (for the first time) socioeconomic indicators in US coral reef areas across the U.S and its territories. The socioeconomic component includes gathering a variety of information, including population demographics, use of coral reef resources, and knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of coral reef resources and management. Social scientists are utilizing indicators that are measured through surveys of residents in the US coral reef jurisdictions and existing socioeconomic data from secondary sources such as the US Census and local government agencies. The resulting information will be valuable for jurisdictional resource managers, educators, and other key partners. This includes data on societal changes, support and/or opposition to management strategies, and perceptions of resource conditions can improve the effectiveness of management, education/outreach, and conservation programs. Resident surveys were conducted in 2014-2015 in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. Similar household surveys were implemented in American Samoa and Florida in 2013-2014. The NCRMP Social Team will present the monitoring approach and key findings from the American Samoa survey conducted in February 2014. Highlights in this presentation include the survey's results and demographics and the role of social monitoring in coastal resource management."
