Dive 4847 - Check on the Eye-in-the-Sea; Collect benthic traps in bio boxes; collect small crustaceans under red light with suction sampler for placement in bio boxes.
Dive started on hard bottom, covered with layer of silt. Used the pinger to track down the Eye-in-the-Sea, whuch was placed next to a rocky outcropping. Picked up the benthic traps approx. 100 ft. away, lying on a low shelf. Region is primarily muddy /sandy bottom with periodic outcroppings of large rocks. Rocks had many corals and sponges growing on them, with crabs and occasional shrimp and fish scurrying about. After retrieving the traps, spent the rest of the dive attempting to collect shrimp from muddy bottom, and crabs and shrimp from rock outcroppings.
To look into the ocean with new eyes, in order to provide a comprehensive characterization of the deep-sea benthic environment.Objectives:1. Continue unobtrusive observations with the Eye-in-the-Sea Camera2. Continue studies of ecological roles of fluorescence in marine organisms.3. Quantify the deep-sea environment as it is perceived by its inhabitants.4. Determine the role of polarized light receiption in the pelagic environment.5. Determine the extent of polarized light reception in deep-sea organisms.6. Determine adaptations in deep-sea benthic organisms for increased sensitivity to light.
