Abstract:
This collection of digital photographs was generated by observations conducted during leg1 of the NOAA Ocean Exploration Program expedition, "Islands in the Stream 2002: Exploring Underwater Oases," conducted from July 27-Aug. 5, 2002. The mission focused on exploring the spawning locations and behavior of reef fishes whose populations are in decline. The primary objective was to locate and characterize suspected fish spawning locations in the South Atlantic Bight, as well as the oceanographic processes that affect them. This information will help to define characteristics of critical spawning habitat and help to establish strategies for protection, including possible designation of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). Expedition staff are affiliated with NOAA, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, and various S.C. school districts. They used the R/V Seward Johnson and the Johnson-Sea-Link II submersible for underwater access to conduct the observations reflected herein.
