General Note:
Dive 4857 - Recover 2 crab traps under red light; deploy 1 crab trap; suction sample galatheid crabs under red light.
Sub descended onto slope, sediment was silty and visibility was approx. 15 ft. with some current. Benthos was dominated bt anemones and urchins. We recovered 2 crab traps (1 empty, another with 1 shrimp), and suction sampled 1 galatheid crab. Dive continued up knoll with bottom composition similar. Over knolls Lophelia corals were encountered and galatheid collection resumed. Ascent occurred from Lophelia colonies.
Abstract:
To look into the ocean with new eyes, in order to provide a comprehensive characterization of the deep-sea benthic environment.Objectives:1. Continue unobtrusive observations with the Eye-in-the-Sea Camera2. Continue studies of ecological roles of fluorescence in marine organisms.3. Quantify the deep-sea environment as it is perceived by its inhabitants.4. Determine the role of polarized light receiption in the pelagic environment.5. Determine the extent of polarized light reception in deep-sea organisms.6. Determine adaptations in deep-sea benthic organisms for increased sensitivity to light.
