Comprehensive Watershed Management Plan for the Manell-Geus watersheds on Guam

Description:

Project Manager:
Rob Ferguson
Project Years:
2021
Project Summary:
This project will develop a comprehensive Watershed Management Plan (WMP) for the Manell-Geus watersheds on Guam in collaboration with local partners and stakeholders. The watershed plan will propose a series of actions to address known sources of land-based pollution. The WMP will include a watershed delineation and characterization, a field assessment, a prioritized list of recommended Best Management Practices (BMPs) and their associated information, the various federal and state agencies, nonprofit organizations, and jurisdictional partners working on LBSP issues to leverage support to implement key management projects, and the results of the stakeholder engagement processes. These components are further described below. In addition, the WMP will address the EPA's nine elements of a watershed management plan to the greatest extent reasonable. See (https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2015 09/documents/2008_04_18_nps_watershed_handbook_handbook-2.pdf) for a detailed list of EPA's Nine Minimum Elements. These are: 1. Identifying causes and sources of pollution, 2. Estimating load reductions expected for management measures, 3. Describing NPS management measures, 4. Estimating the amount of technical and financial assistance needed for implementation, 5. Information and education component, 6. Schedule, 7. Milestones, 8. Criteria for measuring effectiveness, and 9. Monitoring for evaluation.
Expected Outcome:
The expected outcome of this project is to produce a comprehensive watershed management plan for the Manell-Geus watersheds that meets EPA's A-I criteria and will outline targeted LBSP reduction activities that will ultimately improve nearshore water quality for coral reefs.
