Integrating climate resiliency and adaptation into community marine spatial planning

Description:

Project Manager:
Fatima Sauafea-Leau
Project Years:
2018
2019
2020
Project Summary:
The project aims to utilize existing coral resiliency data, including results from Dr. Arielle Levine's project on socio-ecological resiliency of coral reef fisheries and MPA surveys, to facilitate a meeting with resource managers on identifying an integrated process and community participatory planning tools. The project aims to target two village communities: 1) Vatia, one of the priority site for coral reef management in American Samoa, and with great interest from many community members to update their village MPA plan; and 2) Aua, not currently a MPA, but site of a historic 100-year-old coral reef transect, for which the community has requested assistance for management support. The following are the objectives for the proposed project:To educate and inform community stakeholders about current and potential impacts of climate change and climate vulnerability of their village, and determine adaptive planning measures that can be taken to address these impacts; To integrate existing studies about climate vulnerability at the village scale and village level priorities for marine resource management into community planning, to strengthen community adaptive capacity and to generate knowledge and lessons for replication and upscaling throughout American Samoa; To develop village climate adaptation measures and climate stories that will improve community resiliency and management of marine resources.
Expected Outcome:
The following are the objectives for the proposed project: To educate and inform community stakeholders about current and potential impacts of climate change and climate vulnerability of their village, and determine adaptive planning measures that can be taken to address these impacts; To integrate existing studies about climate vulnerability at the village scale and village level priorities for marine resource management into community planning, to strengthen community adaptive capacity and to generate knowledge and lessons for replication and upscalingthroughout American Samoa; andTo develop a village climate adaptation measures incorporated into a village management plan. The expected outcome will be that the two village communities will have integrated management plans that include climate resiliency. The Vatia community will have a Marine Protected Area climate resiliency plan and the Aua community will have a marine conservation and resiliency plan.
