Title: Sampling grids to support the collection and analysis of survey data for the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program in American Samoa, Pacific Remote Islands Areas, Main Hawaiian Islands
Dataset Language: eng; US
Abstract: The sampling grids are identified as essential components for the stratified random sampling design of the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP). The benthic habitat map layers including bathymetry, hard and soft substrates, reef zones and sectors were compiled, standardized, and aggregated into the 50m by 50m sampling grids to provide spatial distribution and area estimates of benthic strata. The grids were assembled for locations within the U.S. Pacific Islands Region including American Samoa, Pacific Remote Island Areas and Main Hawaiian Islands.

Scope (quality information applies to): Dataset
Data History: The process to create the reference grids included: 1) creating consistent unmerged benthic map layers based on best available data, 2) establishing a permanent, georeferenced 50 m x 50 m grid structure and populating the grids with the benthic data layers using a ‘layering’ approach, 3) establishing a common folder/file structure on the PIFSC network and standard naming conventions for maps and grids 4) developing data documentation for source data, and 5) developing methods protocols. Method documents are located on the PIFSC network at: \\PICGOLDFISH\GIS\GIS\Projects\CommonMaps\
