Evaluating an NCRMP Redesign: Zone Based Strategy Power Analysis

Description:

Project Manager:
Thomas Oliver
Project Years:
2020
Project Summary:
To increase the National Coral Reef Monitoring Program's (NCRMP's) power to identify coral reef locations, coral populations, and ecological processes that show differential resilience, we are examining alternative statistical designs for the survey. Specifically, we are considering moving from a wide-but-thin, geographically comprehensive survey covering all reef areas in the US Pacific to a survey more focused on geographically representative zones. This project will build simulation models using existing NCRMP data to critically test the hypotheses surrounding a potential redesign.
Expected Outcome:
The results of these model simulations will inform whether changes in NCRMP sampling design could be expected to improve our ability to infer temporal trends at finer spatial scales and make our survey results more robust to reductions of effort. Both of these impacts would better support resilience-based management in an era of uncertainty about field access. Assuming that selected zones are both broadly representative and selected with an eye toward management needs this design may improve the management relevance of NCRMP data products.
