Abstract:
"This report presents recommendations by the Horsley Witten Group (HW) on strategies to improve stormwater management and increase the implementation of green infrastructure (GI) practices in American Samoa, as requested by the Coral Reef Advisory Group (CRAG). GI practices, such as organic filters, infiltration practices, rainwater harvesting, constructed wetlands, and permeable pavements, are an alternative to conventional pipe and pond (offsite conveyance and detention) approaches to stormwater management. The GI approach offers onsite management options for small storms and relies primarily on infiltration, reuse, and evapotranspiration to reduce runoff volumes and plants and engineered soils for pollutant removal. GI provides other co-benefits such as improved air quality, reduced heat island effects, habitat and biodiversity improvements, and educational opportunities."
