Project Summary:
Acoustic telemetry will be used to track the movements of various reef fish species in the East End Marine Park (EEMP) in St. Croix, USVI. In addition, visual surveys will be used to compare to the extent practical, differences in fish communities relative to earlier assessments. The objective is to determine boundary efficacy, spill-over from no-take areas, and connectivity among MPAs based on fish movements. Spillover from the no-take areas of the EEMP was one of the anticipated benefits of the boundary design, however, this has not been documented to date.
Expected Outcome:
We expect to quantify the residence time, emigration rates, and habitat utilization patterns of reef fish in the no-take portions of the southern side of the EEMP (Jack, Issac, Grapetree Bays). This will be used by EEMP and Territorial authorities to understand the role of the EEMP in protecting reef ecosystem services around St.Croix.
