General Note:
Dive 4853 - To recover the "Eye-in-the-Sea" and Tammy's traps left from before the hurricane; to leave new traps; to take light measurements with spectrometer; to take downwelling measurements with LOLAR and spectrometer.
Recovered 5 downwelling profiles between spectrometer measurements at 50, 100, 200, and 300 meters. Sandy bottom with numerous anemones and small fans. Followed a small trench searching for EITS. Trench appears to be man-made from a cable laying operation. Several small hills visible from 1700-1750 ft. Spent most of bottom time recovering EITS and recovering and deploying Tammy Frank's traps.
Abstract:
To look into the ocean with new eyes, in order to provide a comprehensive characterization of the deep-sea benthic environment.Objectives:1. Continue unobtrusive observations with the Eye-in-the-Sea Camera2. Continue studies of ecological roles of fluorescence in marine organisms.3. Quantify the deep-sea environment as it is perceived by its inhabitants.4. Determine the role of polarized light receiption in the pelagic environment.5. Determine the extent of polarized light reception in deep-sea organisms.6. Determine adaptations in deep-sea benthic organisms for increased sensitivity to light.
