Abstract:
A combination of increased commercial fishing and larger local subsistence harvests has left most of Fiji's coastal waters overfished. Declining fisheries have been exacerbated by habitat decline caused by poor land-use practices, out-breaks of coral predators, and increased storm frequency and coral reef bleaching events. Rural Fijians, who constitute more than half (57%) of Fiji's rapidly-growing population of nearly one million (Fiji Islands Bureau of Statistics, 2008) , have suffered as most of these villagers still lead a traditional subsistence-based livelihood, communally utilizing local marine resources for at least part of their daily protein and income. Over the last nine years, a growing number of Fijian villages have begun to carefully regulate the use of their marine areas through the establishment of locally-managed marine areas (LMMAs). To date there are over two hundred of these LMMAs in operation in Fiji. These LMMAs have partner support of NGOs, government agencies and academic institutes which fall under the umbrella of the FLMMA network which in turn is part of the regional LMMA network (http://www.lmmanetwork.org/)" --Intro.
