Presents a survey of MPA case studies, and key elements of the implementation and management of MPAs. Correlates a comparative analysis of these elements with the effectiveness of specific MPAs to conserve marine biodiversity, and concludes that there are political, social and economic MPA characteristics essential for this protection regardless of location.
