Abstract:
Discusses U.S. Coral Reef Task Force's goal of protecting a minimum of 20% by area of all representative coral reefs and associated habitats as no-take reserves by 2010. Article provides rationale for 20-30% minimum no-take protection to preserve these ecosystems, drawing on reproductive theory, knowledge of vulnerability of reef species, fishery failures analysis, empirical and modeling studies of reserves, and principles of precautionary management.
