This project is a coopertative effort between NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS), U.S. Geological Survey, National Park Service, and the National Geophysical Data Center, to produce benthic habitat maps and georeferenced imagery for the U.S. Virgin Islands. NOS aerial photos were used to create orthophoto mosaics
Ground control points, camera calibration data, and USGS DTM data were used to orthorectify 500 dpi scans of the aerial photos using Socet Set Version 4.2.1. Scanned photos were loaded into Socet Set with kinematic GPS data, camera calibration factors, DTM data, and other corrective measures to eliminate spatial distortion. Once a satisfactory spatial model had been produced (RMS less than 1) the optimal sections of each photo were selected to minimize sun glint, turbidity, etc. and maximize area of interpretable bottom features.
