Habitat Mapping in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary

Description:

Project Manager:
Mike Buchman
Project Years:
2017
2018
Project Summary:
The primary objective of this project is to advance habitat map coverage of priority areas in FKNMS. This project will specifically focus on prioritizing areas to conduct targeted mapping effort to detect change from pre-Hurricane Irma impact and post Hurricane Irma impact. FKNMS, with NCCOS, is uniquely positioned to complete this work. This project will build on and utilize products from previous habitat mapping efforts in FKNMS, most recently work conducted by NCCOS to compile, synthesize and review for data quality all known benthic mapping data in FKNMS and determine its suitability for developing a habitat map, and will use recently processed 2016 NGS Lidar mapping to then identify habitat type. In addition, recent NGS Lidar data collection as part of Hurricane Irma response can be accessed and used to help determine change over time. Project Objectives: 1. Interpret the 2016 NGS Lidar processed data to: a) develop seafloor habitat indicators from Lidar bathymetry; b) with FKNMS and partners identify priority areas for pre-hurricane habitat interpretation (where ground truth data exists; c) classify seafloor habitat types in priority areas. 2. Share the soon to be launched habitat mapping data viewer (developed, in part, with FY17 CRCP project funds) to identify priority areas to further groundtruth seafloor habitat maps. Continue to build the imagery for the habitat mapping data viewer. 3. Facilitate mapping prioritization workshop or webinar among FKNMS management partners. Identify areas for 1) focused change detection mapping for pre and post Hurricane Irma, 2) developing habitat maps in regions where survey data and groundtruthing imagery are available, and 3) gaps in coverage and out-year mapping areas using LIDAR and multibeam, where resources are available.
Expected Outcome:
In addition to raw data and its metadata, this project will generate preliminary benthic habitat maps in FKNMS priority regions.
