Abstract:
Report prepared by Rapid Response team at UNEP GRID Arendal and UNEP World Conservation Monitoring Centre based on surveys of coastal vegetation carried out in 2004, dives at 22 sites in 2006, and an overview of threats to coral reefs from pollution and coastal development worldwide. The work was undertaken in the wake of damage caused to coral reefs worldwide in 1997-98 when sea surface temperatures reached 34 degrees Celsius. Discusses need to reduce local pollution from coastal land areas, and the need for an increase in integrated management of coastlines near marine protected areas. Contents: Preface -- Summary -- Why the Marine and Coastal Environment Matters -- What are Coral Reefs? -- Coral Reefs and Climate Change -- What is Marine Pollution and How Does it Affect Marine Life -- Resilience and Recovery of Coral Reefs and Coastal Habitats -- Global Outlook -- Contributors -- References.
