Abstract:
"In Coral Reef Restoration Handbook, William Precht sets out to produce a book to hasten the learning curve? in helping the scientific, restoration, and management communities compile methods, case studies, and a conceptual framework detailing current coral reef restoration science. Such a book is long overdue, and Precht deserves great credit for handling this task. The book includes 20 chapters on an admirably wide range of topics. Precht lays the books foundation with a generally excellent introductory chapter, which summarizes the process of restoration from its legal and scientific basis through assessment of injury to a good discussion of the potential goals and outcomes of restoration actions and ending with the need for adaptive management and monitoring. After that, there is a more or less random selection of chapters weaving through topics with little apparent rhyme or reason. For example, chapter 2 is a case study assessing damage to Florida reefs from small-boat groundings that is immediately followed by Beth Zimmers chapter entitled Coral Reef Restoration: An Overview.? Zimmers paper is really a nice follow-on to Prechts introductory chapter in which she summarizes restoration methods and projects with a very extensive References section...."
