Rapid assessment and repairs to Green Cay Gut restoration project

Description:

Project Manager:
Rob Ferguson
Project Years:
2018
Project Summary:
In September 2017, two Category 4/5 hurricanes made landfall in the USVI (i.e., Irma, Maria). Imagery and photos from our partners on the ground indicate that the majority of the Green Cay Gut project remains intact (see photos); however there are a few locations where flows appeared to bypass the stone step pools causing side slope erosion at a few locations. Maintenance at these key locations is needed to ensure that flows stay in the channel and side slope erosion is prevented. We anticipate that this will likely include: extension of stone weirs, minimal grading, and re-installation of coir matting and vegetation. At this point these costs are expected to be minimal; however, if these repairs are delayed we could expect continued degradation of the project resulting in increasingly expensive costs. This project will provide rapid assessment, design of project repairs, and restoration of the Green Cay Gut stabilization project.
