Abstract:
Workshops were conducted in St. Croix from August 14-17, 2006, to disseminate preliminary information based on more than two years of research that profiled the social, cultural and economic importance of fishing to St. Croix residents. A second component of the research assessed the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) as perceived by a variety of stakeholders who are directly and indirectly affected by the implementation and existence of MPAs in St. Croix. These workshops served an education and outreach function of social science research in the U.S. Caribbean, contributed to the rapport-building process with local stakeholders, and provided an opportunity to collect new data and more fully discuss preliminary research findings. Workshops are an important part of socio-cultural research in which additional input and feedback from stakeholders strengthens the analysis for the final report so that management decisions are based on the best available scientific information.
