This data set is an ArcView shapefile set that contains locations of sampled coral reef fish species at the National Marine Sanctuary along the Florida Keys. The dataset contains information about 5 classes of coral reefs, 216 fish species, and 6 benthic habitat. The data were collected from 1982.
This data set is a result of the effort by the NOAA Coral Reef Watch Program to monitor and map coral reef fish population in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Files 1979-98_Site-Bottom-Species_Matrix5-dbf.doc (MSWord) and Species.dbf are included as part of this data set in addition to Arcview-specific (.shp, .shx,) and shape files. For correct display, .dbf, .shx, .shp files are used in conjunction with Arcview (ESRI) or compatible software. The supplemental files and the NOAA Technical Memorandum 427 Baseline Data for Evaluating Reef Fish Populations in the Florida Keys, 1979-1998 (TM427.pdf) are available in the in this directory http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/archive/arc0001/0001394/01-version/data/0-data/ Definition of fields in species.dbf (table) accessible with spreadsheet software. CODE - Species code in the data table. It is composed of the first 3 letters of the genus and the first 4 letters of the species separated by a space. SCIENTIFIC- Scientific name of the fish species. COMMON- Common name of the fish species. FAMILY- Scientific name of the fish family. COMMONFAM- Common name of the fish family. FAM_ORD- Phyletic sequence of the fish family based on literature. Values are codes that represent the levels of evolutionary development of the family. The higher level of evolutionary development (more advanced), the higher value in the numeric code. The lower level of evolutionary development (more primitive), the lower value in the numeric code. Robins, C. R., R. M. Bailey, C. E. Bond, J. R. Brooker, E. A. Lachner, R. N. Lea, and W. B. Scott, 1991. Common and Scientific Names of Fishes from the United States and Canada, Fifth Edition. American Fisheries Society, Special Publication 20, 183p. MIN_SIZE- Minimum size (diver observable) of the fish based on literature. MAX_SIZE- Maximum size of the fish based on literature. PREDATOR- "P" denotes the predator status of the fish based on literature. Resource Description: Florida Reef Fish Visual Census 1978-1998 Matrix
