Abstract:
"The National Park Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun y Punta Nizuc (PNCOIMPCPN in Spanish) is a protected area (PA) managed by Mexicos National Commission for Protected Areas (CONANP in Spanish). The coral reefs located within the National Park face multiple drivers of degradation, including those associated to tourism practices, unplanned coastal development, climate change and disease. The PA management plan, published in 2016, sets guidelines for ecosystem protection, management and restoration as well as highlight the social and cultural linkage to the National Park. Previous relevant efforts implemented by the National Park include a social capital assessment conducted in 2014 that identified various groups of stakeholders with different levels of interest and engagement in the proper management of the National Park, and a GEF-funded project that supported the development of a Climate Change Adaptation Program that identified climate change adaptation options for the PA. This project builds on and complements those efforts."
