Assessing socio-economic data and indicators to improve resource management in the US Pacific islands.

Description:

Project Manager:
Supin Wongbusarakum
Project Years:
2018
Project Summary:
This project has the following objectives:1. Examine the feasibility of interdisciplinary monitoring based on biological and socioeconomic data from NCRMP and non-NCRPM assessments and understand how biophysical and social data could complement each other to improve coral reef management and conservation at the island and regional levels.2. Compare socioeconomic data and their assessment design approaches and data collecting methods by NCRMP and non-NCRMP efforts (such as socioeconomic data from SEM-Pasifika assessments in the Pacific that supported by the PIMPAC program or other CRCP and NOAA-supported social scientific projects, including the West HI Human Dimension Integrated Ecosystem Assessment, Socioeconomic Assessment of the Habitat Blueprint Manell-Gues, the Community-Based Subsisting Fishing Areas Socioeconomic Assessment in Hawaii, the Saltonstall-Kennedy project on Assessing and Building Adaptive Capacity to Address Climate Change Impacts on Fishing Communities and Fisheries Resources in Micronesia, and Communities, Social Vulnerability Indicators for Fishing Communities in Hawai‘i, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and American Samoa, and efforts of other SocMon region) to determine how to improve the NCRMP approach and to identify possibilities for collaboration and synergistic activities with other non-NCRMP socioeconomic monitoring efforts.3. Work with the NCRMP socioeconomic monitoring team, providing input on the relevance and usefulness for management of the indicators of the core and jurisdictional modules collected by NCRMP and assisting the development of socioeconomic monitoring indicators that address gaps and help inform coral reef and fisheries managements.4. Develop a brief summary of results and recommendations on adding the above indicators onto monitoring tools and studies that are conducted on regular basis. Share the results and recommendations with other researchers, managers, and conservation practitioner at a relevant venue, tentatively the NOAA Social Coast Forum in 2019 or another relevant domestic or international marine conservation conference.
Expected Outcome:
This project will provide informational exchange opportunities with other socioeconomic monitoring efforts at site levels, including those supported by the PIRO PIMPAC and CRCP in US jurisdictions and affiliated Pacific islands. It will also provide insights into improving other integrating biophysical and socioeconomic monitoring efforts and approaches, including ecosystem approach to fisheries management and integrated ecosystems assessment.
