Abstract:
"The goal of this survey is to better understand resource users knowledge, attitudes and perceptions (KAPs) of coral reefs in 18 survey sites in the priority site in Ka`anapali-Kahekili (West Maui). The design is for at least 200 intercept surveys per site spread out over six months (August 2013 - January 2014) to capture seasonal variability. Highlights of the surveys cover site user demographics, site user activities, perceived benefits associated with coral reefs, user knowledge of site, sources used to obtain information, users' perceptions of coral reef declines and threats, users' concerns regarding shoreline development and invasive species, and user support, effectivenss, and participation in conservation/management strategies. It is felt that the inforation gathered from the survesy can be used 1) to generte discussion, 2)evaluate support for current management strategies, 3) design new management strategies, 4) for education and outreach, and 5) provide baseline datae to evaluate managment impacts."
