Description:

Project Manager:
Scot Frew
Project Years:
2016
2017
2018
2019
2020
Project Summary:
This project continues to build on previous SocMon activities in FY17/18. These activities included capacity building and implementation of SocMon/SEM Pasifika data collection efforts. As well as the development and implementation of new indicators including assessment of climate change vulnerability at the community level. The implementation of human dimensions monitoring activities in each participating region will lead to the production of updated baseline data. The objectives of this project will build on the outputs of the previous activities. Namely this project aims to provide support for data collection, storage, analysis and dissemination from current (FY18/19) monitoring efforts. The funding will support data acquisition from regional partners, data storage will occur at the Caribbean Regional Coordination focal point (UWI-CERMES), Micronesia partner institutions and at NOAA. Statistical software acquisition (Excel, SPSS and other) to support partners, hardware such as external hard drives and updates to the existing SocMon Web site hosted by World FIsh including the database.
Expected Outcome:
The collection of socio- cultural and economic information from communities that rely on coral reef resources continues to add critical as understanding that improved coral reef management and conservation. Understanding knowledge, perceptions, awareness, behavior, consumption patterns of society will lead to better approaches to conserve habitat and marine ecosystems. Among other things, some of the expected outcomes from this project are: Facilitation of stakeholder involvement through improved understanding of community perceptions and needs; Tailored management approaches applicable to the local situation, this includes developing education programs based on community members' understanding of resources conditions and threats.Satisfying local data needs that can be used in the assessment of community level social and economic vulnerability to the impacts of climate changeThe focus of this year’s project will be to continue training specifically in analysis of the data collected from follow up assessments thus providing information on trends that can assist in tracking progress or lack thereof of site based coral reef and fisheries management measures. The key outcome will be the safe collection and electronic storage of the regional data sets. Improvements to the existing data base will also part of the activities for this year's project. Additional outcomes include analysis of the data using advanced statistical approaches .Another major expected outcome is the work toward socio-ecological monitoring with biophysical partners and working to increase the profile and use of socioeconomic monitoring data and approaches in the new GCRMN Steering Committee Strategic Planning.
