Implementing the CRCP International Strategy in the Wider Caribbean: Projects Support

Description:

Project Manager:
Scot Frew
Project Years:
2015
Project Summary:
This project implements Priority Goal 1 of the CRCP International Strategy to support MPA networks and strengthen local MPA management capacity in the Wider Caribbean region by continuing to support MPA capacity-building initiatives, principally activities that directly respond to management needs of 27 MPAs in ten Caribbean countries and territories (Bahamas, Turks and Caicos Islands, Mexico, Belize, Honduras, British Virgin Islands, Saba & St. Eustatius, St Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Grenada) that participated in a capacity assessment funded and completed by CRCP in 2011. In 2015 the project will focus primarily on follow-up capacity-building activities at individual and/or groups of MPAs in one country based on management needs identified at previous peer-to-peer learning exchanges which themselves covered four of the highest priority needs identified in the MPA assessment: Enforcement and Compliance; Sustainable Financing; Socio-economic Monitoring; and Management Planning. 2016 funds will support additional follow-up activities. Potential activities include sustainable financing at the Pelican Cays Land and Sea Park (Bahamas), enforcement and compliance, across a set of Bahamas MPAs; management planning, Sandy Island/Oyster Bed MPA (Grenada), management planning, Tobago Cays Marine Park (St Vincent and the Grenadines), management planning, Hans Creek Fishery Protection Area (BVI), and Coral monitoring, resilience planning and bleaching/disturbance response, Columbus Landfall National Park (Turks & Caicos) An additional peer-to-peer learning exchange of MPA practitioners focusing on a 5th, to be determined priority management need may also be convened in 2015 or 2016.
Expected Outcome:
This project will increase the effectiveness of MPAs in the Caribbean region by continuing to build partnerships to support MPA management capacity and informing the CRCP and its partners of priority MPA management needs.
