Abstract:
Summarizes results of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) scientific workshop on priority marine habitats in the federal waters of the Mid-Atlantic. Includes maps developed by GIS of areas recommended for protection with rationales and supporting references for each area. Criteria used for identifying priority areas were: biodiversity, high abundance, migratory pathways, physical features, nursery or spawning areas, endangered or threatened species, and fisheries. Areas receiving the most recommendations were submarine canyons, offshore waters near Cape Hatteras, tilefish habitat between Cape May and Cape Cod, a 35-kilometer corridor extending from shore of nearshore waters, and the continental shelf/slope break, from the 100-meter to 400-meter isobath.
