How should wave energy inform coral restoration actions: review and recommendations

Description:

Project Manager:
Shay Viehman
Project Years:
2018
Project Summary:
Coral restoration actions need to be scaled up across US Caribbean jurisdictions likely including Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands to address coral reef ecosystem degradation and physical impacts from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. A best management practices (BMPs) guidance document provides the critical framework necessary to have comparable data across areas and thus address the question about the success of coral restoration at a jurisdictional or regional scale. The goal of this project is to develop a best management practices document for coral restoration monitoring. This project will synthesize and build on existing coral monitoring for restoration, develop a guidance document, field test the methodology with post-hurricane restoration monitoring, and synthesize survey data from October 2016 coral impacts survey in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary after Hurricane Irma. This BMPs document will be written to span a wide variety of approaches and capacity: from scientific approaches to local practitioners. As part of this project, NOAA's National Centers for Coastal and Ocean Science will also identify known gaps and recommendations for future development in restoration monitoring. This BMPs document has been identified as a top priority for the Coral Restoration Monitoring Working Group of the nascent Coral Restoration Consortium, which has members hailing from all over the Caribbean and Pacific, and includes practitioners, scientists, and managers. This project will partner with members of said Working Group. Objectives of the project include: 1) Compiling established monitoring approaches to coral restoration and ecosystem monitoring; 2) Describing approaches for an audience ranging from researchers to managers to practitioners; 3) Potential field testing methodology for hurricane responses; and 4) developing analytic framework for impact assessments and restoration triage actions.
Expected Outcome:
This document will guide how to Increase consideration of wave energy effects to coral restoration planning to improve success potential. It will also provide suggestions for future directions for research to address knowledge gaps on wave energy effects on coral coral restoration.
