Abstract:
Doctoral thesis which proposes that a lack of ecological knowledge leads to poor ecosystem management, and addresses the need to better understand social-ecological systems and the role humans play in feedback management in their governance systems. Examines papers on responses of fishes to algal reductions at Glovers Reef, Belize; on the lobster and conch fisheries of Belize; on development and government policies for shrimp farming industry in Thailand in relation to mangrove ecosystems; and on comparing the lobster fisheries in Maine and Belize.
