Abstract:
Anthropogenic pollutants are a major threat to the health and fitness of coral reefs. These pollutants can be found in the water column or concentrate in the sediments, where they may be toxic to marine life. This 17-minute video demonstrates simple, specific, low-cost procedures for collecting water, sediment, and pore water samples from a coral reef environment, including the preparation, the tools and equipment needed and the proper procedure for sediment and water sample collection for toxicity testing and contaminant chemistry analysis. This training video will discuss: Proper preparation of tools and collection materials. Preparation of the tools to avoid contamination. How to clean the diver and dive gear for sampling. Surface preparations. In water sampling techniques. Proper handling and storage techniques of the sediment or water sample. Using these techniques will ensure uniform procedures are followed by samplers and ensure that samples are uncompromised in quality. 508 Compliance advisory: This film is closed captioned for the hearing impaired.?
