Building community trust, empowerment and resiliency in improving coastal habitats and coral reef management in Pala Lagoon.

Description:

Project Manager:
Fatima Sauafea-Leau
Project Years:
2015
Project Summary:
The proposed project aims to continue the FY14 pilot work (Project ID 1124) by expanding community conservation efforts to a local high school located near Pala Lagoon to engage in a School-based Conservation Project through 6 months within the school year with the assistance and support from members of the community groups involved in the FY14 pilot project. The project will collaborate with key local and federal resource partners, the Department of Education, and community organizations to plan and coordinate a school-based habitat project, and by providing students with additional community stewardship and hands-on restoration opportunities for fish habitat improvement. The project will provide an opportunity for members of three community groups from the FY14 pilot work to present on their community projects and share experiences on the work they have implemented for Pala Lagoon. Outreach material produced and developed by these community groups in the FY14 pilot work will be used to provide further education and outreach throughout the course of the project. This will provide information on areas at Pala Lagoon identified by the community as a priority for restoration and conservation, and could be recommended for continuous work for a School-based Restoration project. The students will actively engage in the planning, coordinating, and implementing of a restoration project for 6 months. They will engage in hands-on stewardship of fish habitat through restoration and conservation education on Pala Lagoon to mitigate nearby runoff, land-based sources of pollution, coastal erosion, and other impacts. In addition, they will present their findings, experiences, and project report to local and federal resource partners, school administration, and key community members in a one day seminar.
Expected Outcome:
The overall expected outcome of this project is to build and promote partnerships with strong community support, to coordinate and implement habitat restoration projects and conservation activities for a resilient and sustainable management of Pala Lagoon. The information collected from the PLA community work in 2011 in Nu’uuli and from community work for the FY14 pilot project will be used to identify key issues, messages, and objectives for project planning and implementation. The project will provide an opportunity to community groups engaged in the pilot project to share their experiences and restoration ideas as recommendations for a school-based conservation project for the students in Nu’uuli High School to engage in. The students shall actively engage in the planning, coordination, and implementation of a conservation project for 6 months.
