Project Summary:
NOAA, as co-chair of the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force, is responsible for hosting one meeting in FY25 (location TBD). This project supports NOAA's responsibility to host these two meetings and general administrative management needs of the USCRTF. Specific USCRTF activities related to place-based partnerships (Fisheries, Watershed working groups). NOAA's position as co-chair allows us to take a larger leadership role in the coral reef conservation community as well as help facilitate collaboration across the federal family and the 7 U.S. coral reef jurisdictions. The Coral Program coordinates our involvement by 1) providing staff support on both content and logistics for Task Force meetings and initiatives to the member of NOAA leadership serving as the official USCRTF co-chair, 2) providing a co-chair for the CRTF Steering Committee to lead the development and implementation of USCRTF initiatives through monthly calls and the two business meetings each year, and 3) providing logistical and planning support for two meetings a year. Alternating with DOI every other year NOAA is responsible for various meeting costs such as venue, supplies, printing, travel for invited speakers, etc. These meetings allow members and staff by targeted discussion and commitments to action to further the goals and objectives agreed upon by the Task Force in its annual work plan including three objectives included in the National Ocean Policy Implementation Plan (Coral Injury Response and Mitigation Handbook, Watershed Partnership Initiative, and Coral Bleaching Response Plans for each jurisdiction) as well as suggest new or emerging topics of focus. NOAA's partners for this project include the Governments of the seven U.S. Coral Reef Jurisdictions, EPA, USDA, USACE, DOI (USGS, FWS, NPS, OIA), DOJ, DOD, USCG, USAID, and DOS. The Task Force has also been working with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to implement its Watershed Partnership Initiative.
Expected Outcome:
At the upcoming USCRTF Business Meeting that will be held in the USVI, the task force will:continue the National Ocean Policy Action: "Strengthen interagency collaboration to protect and conserve coral reef ecosystems"continue to implement Watershed Partnership Initiative activities in Faga’alu, AS, Guanica Bay, PR and West Maui establish of a Coral Reef Restoration working group hold meetings of the Climate Change, Coral Restoration, and Public-Private Partnership working groups, which NOAA co-chairs; and develop and pass an updated version of Resolution 25.1 as a Framework for Priority Action FY21-25 checking off items completed from Res 25.1, assessing items in progress or not yet started, and considering new items
